We are Julie Gelfand and Steve Piper. We photograph weddings as a team, each of us carrying a camera, each contributing a distinct point of view. We look beyond the obvious, exploring the nuances of light, the ways that people relate to each other and their environment, and the delightful juxtapositions that may occur. What sustains us after over 20 years of photographing weddings is that “aha!” moment of a new discovery. The resulting photos are often joyful, playful, poignant, or humorous. Our work is all about making connections: how the couple connects to each other and their friends and family, and how we connect to what we see. With two of us photographing, we are able to provide extensive and varied coverage.
Our work is largely photojournalistic in approach, with time set aside for group photos, and photos of the couple away from family and friends. Whenever possible, we will also arrange a “getting to know you” session before the wedding day. The photos from that day are often some of our favorites, while the goal is to establish camaraderie and trust. We choose a location, and go on a play date. The couple becomes comfortable in front of the camera, while we gain insight into how to work with them at the wedding.
Developing relationships with our brides and grooms is important to us and can make a big difference on the wedding day. Couples find that we are easy going, friendly, and like to chat. As a husband/wife team, we know a lot about being married, raising kids, and chasing dogs. When not being photographers, we romp with our two goldendoodles and one puggle, go on occasional journeys, and visit our daughters who now live in Boston. Steve is also a dedicated singer-songwriter. All the music on our web site was written and performed by him.
