Foster fell in love with wedding photojournalism innocently. He transitioned into wedding photography after returning to Canada for an assignment in his hometown, and meeting the woman of his dreams.

Foster and his wife Tammy own and operate a studio in Southwestern Ontario, and photograph weddings in Canada, and internationally. Foster applies the same editorial style and approach to weddings as he’s always done for the newspapers and magazines he’s worked for around the globe.

Our international photography awards include third place in the ISPWP Spring Contest 2010; eight accolades of excellence from the WPPI 2010 Awards of Excellence competition; the Brides.ca Best Wedding Photo of 2009; three Accolades of Excellence for the WPPI second half of 2009 8×10 competition; placing in the 2009 Wedcomp competition; placing in the WPJA 2008 Q4; second place in the Sun Times Best of the Best of 2008; second and third places in the DWF 2007 Photographer of the Year in the portraits and couples categories; and more. Our images have been published in magazines, wedding blogs, and one of our images appears on the cover of the 2009 book Wedding Photography Posing as well as throughout the book.

With a background in music his passion, vision and imagination sets him apart time and time again. Michael’s belief that capturing the soul of the photograph is essential to the consciousness and personality of every moment and every story.

His love of photography goes beyond taking pictures, but sharing his knowledge with those eager to learn. He has conducted workshops and education sessions for photographers and students in the USA, Canada, and Malaysia.

Phototerra Studio, which Michael founded in 2003, has locations in Montreal, Toronto,  and will soon be opening in New York.

Michael and the studio have been recognized globally, as he has been the recipient of the 1st place prize for photojournalistic photography two years in a row, winning the most awards in various categories in 2009, and winning the Grand Award in 2010 at the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International Association (WPPI). In the past three years, he has had over 60 accolades of excellence at the WPPI, and he’s been voted as on of the top ten 10 wedding photographers in Canada.

Our approach is a blend of photojournalism and editorial style coverage – we love working with our clients to make them look gorgeous and their most amazing selves during our photo sessions, while at the same time taking the approach of a quiet thoughtful observer during the events of the wedding day. While we are not traditional photographers, we understand the importance of quality family portraits and will take pride and the time necessary to do them beautifully. One part pensive, one part quirky we are all about pursuing the defining moments and making them into striking, lasting images. We love stretching our creativity and are passionate about finding beauty in everyone and everything.

To be let into the lives of a couple, on one of the most important days of their lives, is such an incredible honor. To be given the responsibility of capturing this day, including every emotion, detail, and important moment, is an even greater privilege. We value this privilege and in exchange, we strive to deliver photos that tell the story of the day in a unique and creative manner.
