We are proud to recognize Nik Pekridis with the Lens & Light Honor.

~

A third generation photographer, Nik Pekridis has been shooting for more than 25 years. Since he turned his attention to weddings, Nik has catapulted to the top of the wedding photography field, and has become especially well-known for his incredible portraits. Actively engaged in the industry, Nik is the co-founder of photo wedding stories, and is a regular speaker and judge for conventions and contests such as SWPP.

This summer Nik put on an excellent 5-day workshop in Santorini along with Adam Alex, Sofie Louca and Paul Karaolides. Coming up in October, Nik will join the dream team of 7 master photographers (Nik, Yervant, David Beckstead, Bambi Cantrell, Michael Greenburg, Laslo Gabany, and Graham Monro) at Yervant’s Grand Workshop in Corfu, Greece for a week of intense seminars, hands-on photo sessions and a fair bit of fun, too.

How did you get into wedding photography?

Well, first of all thank you. It’s a huge honor for me to be featured on Lens and Light especially because I live in a small country. And even though I have been a photographer from the age of 12, my epiphany actually came in 2007. So, while I have been shooting weddings a long time, I feel at the age of 42 that I have only really done weddings for the last 4 years. I got into wedding photography because of my dad who was also a wedding photographer. I actually shot my first wedding at the age of 12 back in 1981. It wasn’t pretty: Manual focus, flash on camera and bad pictures. I am serious. I was a very bad photographer until 2007 when I attended a Yervant’s seminar in my city. He is the guy who “pushed the button” in my mind. Because of him, I started over and found my true photographic self. I will always be thankful to him and admire him.

How would you describe your style?

My style changes all the time, and it has especially changed from before: as my friend Rocco Ancora says, “The definition of a photography style is the journey and not the destination.”So now my style is romantic, moody, and “dark”… ha ha ha.

Can you share some of your favorite images?

Who or what inspires you to create great imagery?

I love the low saturation Rembrandt light-dark images. I am influenced by, and “steal ideas” from, great photographers like Nick Ghionis, David Beckstead, Rocco Ancora, Megaloudis, Shembri, Yervant, Garner and so many others. I believe that we all have something to share and to give. My favorite images are ones I usually get in low-light conditions, and even though I am usually shooting in ambient daylight, I often use a flash and/or a video light.

What cameras do you shoot with, what’s your favorite lens, and what’s your favorite accessory other than your cameras/lenses?

I use Nikon D3 & D700 cameras and my favorite lenses are the 50mm 1.4, the 85 mm 1.4, and the 70-200 2.8.

How important is post processing in your final images?

For me, post processing is 30-40% of the image. Even the greatest image can gain from a proper photoshop tweaking.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

I think a good wedding photographer has a very challenging job. He or she needs to have the ability to shoot still life (for the detail shots), portrait and fashion for the photo shoot session, and photo journalism skills for the ceremony, first dance, etc and all of the above without second chance!

How did you get into wedding photography?

I’ve been shooting as a professional photographer for 16 years, and I started specializing in weddings right away. Like all young guys I wanted to photograph weddings because I thought it would be a great way to photograph beautiful girls and also because I thought it would allow me to make money quickly from the business. So I approached a very prominent studio at the time and assisted them for a year and a half with no pay – carrying bags until they finally hired me full time as a professional photographer.

How would you describe your style?

My style is very glamorous and natural at the same time. My images tend to have the finesse of a pose with the natural feel of a candid image. I place a big emphasis on the story telling aspect of the day, as well as shooting with empathy for more striking and powerful images. But in addition to that, I also make sure that I never leave a wedding without creating several “wow” shots.

Can you share some of your favorite images and tell us what went into making them and why you like them?

For this first image, I photographed a couple on a windy beach in Miami very late at night. It was a very magical night and I allowed myself to feel the moment. The wind caught the bride’s veil and it gave me the idea for another image paying homage to Michelangelo’s Creating of Adam painting that appears in the Sistine Chapel. The sky was completely dark but I exposed for it first. I then turned my white balance to shade to amplify any tones that were in the sky – even if I couldn’t see it with my naked eye. I then used off-camera flash to illuminate my bride. Because it was so dark, I needed a flashlight to focus on her first.

This next image is of a wedding I photographed in Rome, Italy. It is the only time that I have walked into a church and felt overcome by the sheer beauty of everything around me. It was one of the most beautiful and theatrical sights I have ever seen. As the bride and groom were walking back up the aisle after the wedding, I stopped them and posed them in a way to show off the grandeur of everything around them.

For this image, I did an engagement session recently where all of the images were inspired from different movies I had seen. The inspiration for this particular image came from the movie Malena. There is a scene in the movie where the main character sits in chair in a courtyard, puts a cigarette to her lips and all of the men immediately rush to be the first to light her cigarette. Since I didn’t have ten different men to use in my image, placed my bride in a chair and set my camera onto a tripod. I made sure my focus point was on the tip of the cigarette. I then took my bride out of the scene and took several images of my groom in different positions. Then I combined the images later in Photoshop to create a unique composite image.

This was one of the last images I took on the wedding day. It was pouring rain outside, but I convinced my couple that if they went outside for one last image it would be worth it. I had my assistant stand behind them with an off camera flash as the only light source and it created a beautiful effect in camera.

What cameras do you shoot with, what’s your favorite lens, and what’s your favorite accessory other than your cameras/lenses?

I use a Canon 5D Mark II and Phase I camera system with a P40+ back. The lens I tend to use the most during a wedding day is the 700-200mm f/2.8 L IS. But aside from a camera or a lens, my favourite accessory would have to be jewellery and sunglasses.

How important is post processing in your final images?

I am a strong believer in in-camera artistry although certainly believe in finessing an image in Photoshop to bring out the best in it. The advice that I give my digital artist when retouching an album is that I’m looking for “invisible Photoshop”. That basically means that most of my images will be colour corrected and will have some retouching but not much more than that. I feel that there is a new generation of photographers where many of them have become lazy shooters and then overzealously Photoshop their images.

Who or what inspires you to create great imagery?

One of my favourite mantras is, “You don’t have to be the best. You just have to be better than last week.” And I truly believe this. I’m always trying to beat last week’s effort. If we’re talking about general inspiration, then fashion, music and cinema are my three favourite sources of inspiration.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

It’s the ability to work under pressure, think quickly, and create the best out of any situation. Bringing the best out of any situation is one thing that I really pay attention to every week when I’m presented with less than desirable locations. A photographer’s communication skills are their most valuable asset. The ability to read people and the situation will allow them to be able to bring the best out of their subjects.

What do you think are the most important trends in wedding photography today?

Let me answer this question by saying what I believe are the most unimportant trends in photography. I was recently surfing random photographers’ websites and a common trend that I saw was that many of them were focused on showing images of decorative details at the expense of exploring emotion, relationships, storytelling and glamour. Very few of the new generation truly understand lighting and posing and unfortunately many images that I see look like glorified snapshots.

If not a photographer, what would you want to be?

I don’t think it’s any secret that I want to be a singer in my alternate life. At the age of 15 I had decided that I wanted to be either a singer or a photographer. I decided back then that a photography career was probably the more viable option so now I just sing whenever I can!

Since 2006, Jasmine Star has taken the industry by storm. Named as one of the ten best wedding photographers in the world in 2009 by American Photo, Jasmine has become known for her intimate and creative photo stories, her dedication to getting to know her clients personally, and her engaging blog.

With more than 12,000 Twitter followers and more than 18,000 fans on Facebook, Jasmine has also developed a strong social media presence. As she puts it, “I developed a voice and online brand by leveraging social media and developing techniques to empower clients to become the voice of my brand.”

Dedicated to shooting in natural light, Jasmine works hard to make her brides feel “beautiful and fabulous” whether the setting is a picturesque garden or a patch of radiant orange gravel. For the dance floor, though, Jasmine uses a Canon Speedlite 550EX and has a custom-designed set up for a PocketWizard Plus II, and she’ll often set up an off-camera flash near the DJ or band.

Based in Orange County, California, Jasmine travels worldwide to cover weddings and to teach courses on wedding photography, marketing and branding.

How did you get into wedding photography?

The answer to this question is quite detailed and complex, but the shortest answer could be summed up in one word: Fate.

I was at UCLA Law School in 2005 when I received news my mother had a relapse with brain cancer. The news hit me harder than I can adequately describe and I took a medical leave to be by her side. I moved back home and while I was happy to be with my mom, I felt lost, frustrated, and depressed.

I was at the lowest point in my life and I was desperately praying for deliverance. Thankfully, it came: In the form of an engagement ring. My boyfriend, JD, proposed and we decided to plan a destination wedding in Hawaii. Seven months later – against all odds – my mother walked me down the aisle with my father on my wedding day.

And the best part? My wedding photographer, David Jay, captured it all magically. His photos moved me. Challenged me. Gave me hope and allowed me to believe in dreams again. I saw his life, passion, and art, and I wanted to do the same thing.

So I did. I had never touched a digital camera in my life, but I assisted a few wedding photographers the summer of 2006, and then shot my first solo wedding in October of 2006. From there, my business grew and I ended up shooting 38 weddings in 2007.

My path to into photography is mangled, but it’s beautiful because it’s mine. And I wouldn’t change a thing about my crazy journey.

How would you describe your style?

Lifestyle Photography for Fabulous People.

Can you share some of your favorite images and tell us what went into making them and why you like them?

Kristin and Brandon
I’m a lover of soft, natural light … and any time I can capitalize on its presence, I will. The morning sun worked its way through the trees and cast a beautiful glow around the bride and groom … all I had to do was stand back and click as they enjoyed themselves on their wedding day.

© Jasmine Star

Emily and DJ
I love the simplicity of the image and it’s indicative of my shooting style. I prefer shooting wide open (this shot was at a f/1.2) and creating a clear focal point so the viewer can see life through my eyes and feel the moment as uniquely their own.

© Jasmine Star

Stephanie
I love my brides. They’re all unmistakably fabulous. And beautiful. I shot the following bridal portraits with a 85mm at f/1.2 with allowed me to capture the ambient light and created the perfect setting. I find nothing more rewarding than watching a woman feel confident while being photographed … it’s one of life’s greatest rewards.

© Jasmine Star

Kristin and her bridesmaids
I am smitten with untraditional group formal photos and when I’m given the opportunity to work with a fabulous group of girls, I jump at the chance to have some fun!

~

What cameras do you shoot with, what’s your favorite lens, and what’s your favorite accessory other than your cameras/lenses?

I shoot with the Canon 5DMII and my favorite lens is the 50mm, 1.2. I shoot with this dynamic duo more often than not, and it’s truly helped define my style.

How important is post processing in your final images?

I view post processing like salt on a really great meal. It’s merely the spice and flavor to a meal, but not the meal itself. I use minimal processing and prefer to shoot images in-camera as close as possible to the desired end product. I’m often asked about post processing, so if you’d like to read more about my preferences and techniques, you can read more about it on my blog: Jasmine Star

Who or what inspires you to create great imagery?

I know it sounds cliché, but I promise it’s the truth. My basis of inspiration is God. I photograph people because we are all reflections of something great and beautiful; something far beyond our understanding. I am inspired by people because they are merely small divisions of God.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

The pressure. Sometimes I feel like a brussel sprout in a pressure cooker on a wedding day. There’s SO much going on in a concise duration of time and fleeting memories are hard to capture. But the good news is that I thrive on pressure … it challenges me and allows me to feel alive. That’s the best part of what I do.

If not a photographer, what would you want to be?

Realistically, I probably would have been a lawyer. Unrealistically, I’d love to be a writer. With a few books on the New York Times best sellers list!

When Deena and Nawaf contacted me from Philly, I could never imagine I would be the one chosen to shoot their wedding in Cairo.

Both of them had a connection with Egypt and it felt just natural to organize the whole wedding at Deena’s uncle’s gardens in the outskirts of Cairo. Not an easy task to fulfill from the US, but in a matter of weeks, everything was ready to go.

My second shooter and I flew in three days before the wedding from Stockholm and we had the chance of getting to know this wonderful couple better when we shoot their couple shoots on the day they got legally married.

We spend the day in Cairo’s market place, in Old Town, as well as by the Great Pyramids, at sunset.

In Egypt, getting legally married is not the most important part of the wedding. What really matters is the religious blessing given by an Egyptian priest and the Zaffa, the famous Egyptian musical-dancing procession followed by lots of good food and dancing, dancing, dancing, all night long!

Too many wonderful pictures to be posted in only one post, so I’ve divided the four days we spent together into many smaller posts. To see them all, please visit the links given under the pictures!

~

Known the world over for his stunning documentary-style wedding photography and his work as a Canon Ambassador, Jeff Ascough works to elevate wedding photography to an art form. Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson and the work of James Nachtwey. Jeff’s unobtrusive approach yields honest, truthful and timeless images that serve as treasured memories for his brides.

For Jeff, a wedding is a sacred occasion – and the photographer’s role is to capture the unfolding events quietly, simply, without attracting attention. He challenges himself to create his award-winning wedding images by using available light almost exclusively. He shoots deliberately and carefully, crafting each image with incredible care. For Jeff, every picture should stand out. Every single photograph should be both aesthetically appealing and emotionally evocative.

With more than 20 years of wedding photography experience, Jeff has used this documentary storytelling approach to cover more than 1000 wedding assignments. His client roster boasts countless girls-next-door and plenty of celebrities including Kevin Pieterson and Jessica Taylor, Jill Halfpenny and Craig Conway and Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien.

How did you get into wedding photography?

I was invited to join my parents fledgling photography business back in 1989. I was actually thinking about doing a degree in Psychology prior to that, but I found that photography was really what I wanted to do in life.

How would you describe your style?

In short I shoot documentary/street style images on a wedding day. My style is unobtrusive but faithful and true to the people and the events that surround the wedding day.

© Jeff Ascough

© Jeff Ascough

© Jeff Ascough

What cameras do you shoot with, what’s your favorite lens, and what’s your favorite accessory other than your cameras/lenses?

I currently shoot with two Canon EOS 1DMKIV cameras. My favourite lens will always be the 50mm f1.2L but I find myself shooting mainly with the 16-35 f2.8LII these days.

How important is post processing in your final images?

It is paramount to my style. With good post processing I can create the image that was in my mind’s eye when I pressed the shutter. For me, capturing the actual image is only the start of making a great picture.

Who or what inspires you to create great imagery?

I have always been inspired by the great documentary/street photographers of the 21st Century, and I guess I always will be. Cartier-Bresson is the biggest influence on my style, his love of composition and the ‘decisive moment’ are ingrained in my photographic soul.

Sebastiao Salgado and his use of light, and the way he has his images printed to bring drama to his pictures are important to me. I also like the way he sees a collection of pictures as being important in telling the story.

I enjoy the work of Gary Winogrand, Eugene Richards and James Nachtwey for their use of space and wide-angle lenses—something which I have noticed in my work over the past couple of years. Then there are legends like Don McCullin who continues to inspire and challenge me when it comes to taking pictures, not just at a wedding. I rarely look at other wedding photography—it just doesn’t interest me at all.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

For me it is all about trying to improve my work, season on season. I find actually shooting a wedding really easy and comfortable, as I’ve been doing it for so long now, but I always push and challenge myself to get better images. I still practice different shooting techniques away from the wedding, and I continue to train myself to become a better photographer.

What do you think are the most important trends in wedding photography today?

Honestly. I have no idea. I don’t tend to follow wedding photography.

If not a photographer, what would you want to be?

A criminal psychologist. Psychology is my other passion.

Emotions high altitude pictures taken in unusual locations around 1800 meters altitude. The winter day but with a beautiful blue sky. This wedding has been made in the mountains near Lake Como in Italy, a location with strong contrast between mountains and lake. For shooting outdoors, we reached the summit of the mountain with a helicopter …. needless to say the emotion and joy of the newlyweds when they saw the beautiful scenery with their eyes. The light at this altitude is fantastic, and natural and emotional.

The bride and groom on the snow to take pictures unique and unusual.
I do not happen every day to be in a location like this, maybe it would impossiile to reach!

~

Happily married for more than 10 years, Alisha and Brook share a passion for people and art which is readily evident in their blend of documentary and fine art photography. Alisha and Brook live in sunny California with their beautiful daughter (whom they adore), Giada Bella.

This dynamic duo travels worldwide to photograph destination weddings ~ from the warm, sandy beaches of Mexico and Hawaii to the breathtaking hills of romantic Tuscany, Italy. Locally, it might seem that Alisha and Brook have left their hearts in San Francisco, since many of the California weddings they photograph are in this lovely city by the bay. Yet, you’ll also frequently find them shooting weddings in the vineyards of Napa Valley and in charming Carmel.

No strangers to Hollywood, Alisha and Brook have photographed A-list celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Shania Twain, jazz artists Diana Krall and Chris Botti, Adam Sandler, and Rob Schneider. Alisha and Brook also photographed the wedding of Major League Baseball player Pat Burrell (of the Phillies). In 2004, Alisha and Brook photographed the nationally-televised Fantasy Wedding Dreams Come True (designed by celebrity event planner Colin Cowie) which was featured on the Oprah Show. As their images appeared at the conclusion of the show, Oprah acknowledged them as “Fabulous photographers capturing every moment, Brook and Alisha Todd.”

In 2007, Alisha and Brook were named by American PHOTO magazine as one of the 10 Best Wedding Photographers in the World.

Not surprisingly, their images have have graced the pages of many top magazines including Destination Weddings, Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, Weddingbells, The Knot, Elegant Bride and Get Married. Alisha and Brook have also appeared in books including Signature Sasha: Magnificent Weddings by Design, The Best of Wedding Photography, and The Portrait Photographers. In addition, they have also been interviewed in articles of the following publications: Studio Photography, American PHOTO, Kodak’s ProPass, and Rangefinder.

Awards granted to Alisha and Brook include the Grand Award for Photojournalism and First Place for Wedding Photojournalism from WPPI, and they have both received the Accolade of Photographic Mastery for their award-winning images. Sponsored by Kodak, Alisha and Brook continue to speak at WPPI’s international conventions as platform speakers. And as two of the founding members of “The Shortlist,” a select group of elite wedding professionals in San Francisco, Alisha and Brook are also members of PPA.

~

How did you get into wedding photography?

I knew from the very beginning when I took my first photography class in high school, that this was what I wanted to do. I started with portrait work while I was in college and then when a close friend was going to get married and asked me to photograph her wedding. I realized that I enjoyed it and that this was going to be my direction.

Brook had taken photography in high school also, but started at first with carpentry, which he did for several years. He assisted me during my first couple of years in doing wedding photography, and we discovered that he had the ‘eye’ for this. He’d found his niche, too.

How would you describe your style?

We’ve said for years that our style was ‘fine art meets photojournalism’. The truth is that since we’ve left film a couple of years ago, I would say that our work took on a different look: a more cinematic look. Our vision is fashion, with romance.

What cameras do you shoot with, what’s your favorite lens, and what’s your favorite accessory other than your cameras/lenses?

We use Canon 5D’s. Brook’s favorite lens is the 35-350 because it’s so versatile. Of course, it’s not a good lens indoors, but we shoot a lot of Napa weddings, which are predominantly outdoors. My fave is the 70-200 2.8 IS, which is fabulous indoors and outdoors. It’s a great lens to shoot photojournalistically and not be in anyone’s face. I love a big telephoto lens for the portraits of the bride and also the bride and groom. We both adore our 85 mm 1.2 lens!

As far as an accessory is concerned, I like to use a tripod to get scene setters that show off the reception. It’s not that I couldn’t skip it and just shoot high speed, but I always used it with film and I like to get the best quality scene setters.

How important is post processing in your final images?

While post processing can be very creative, the most important part is that the image has to be there first. It shouldn’t be about shooting a massive amount of images and hoping that some of them work, nor telling yourself that you can just make it work later. We do enhance the images, but feel that the impact of the initial image is primary and the enhancement is secondary. The enhancement, to me, should be like spice: it’s needed but should improve what’s already there.

Who or what inspires you to create great imagery?

We’ve been inspired by a number of great photographers during our career. However, a lot of other things have inspired us, too, such as film noire from the forties, the cinematography of some current movies and a lot of music videos, which are usually pretty cutting edge.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?

When other things run late before you, the photography time is reduced by the length of time that the previous vendor was over. Then the photographer has to produce the expected body of work with a reduced time, catch the timeline up to speed and get the bride and groom to the reception on time. There can be other things occasionally, such as guests who think that they are the official photographer and try to shoot every shot over your shoulder.

What do you think are the most important trends in wedding photography today?

This is probably not the answer you might expect, but the biggest trend in wedding photography is that brides think that is that every photographer is negotiable. We realize that people are affected by the recession, but quality should still be viewed as quality. To quote something from Grace Ormonde: ‘The bitterness of poor quality remains long after low pricing is forgotten’. We know how important the photographs are. These become the client’s memories when day rushes by like a blur. We need to remind people people how meaningful these images are when this is all that remains of such a momentous day in their life.

If not a photographer, what would you want to be?

Brook says that he would do something in sales. I would either be a makeup artist or a Disney princess!
